Prof Naomi Rogers has over 18 years experience in chronobiology, sleep, sleep disturbance and neurocognitive functioning. She has a longstanding interest in the health consequences of circadian disruption and sleep disturbance. Prof Rogers has an international reputation in the areas of circadian disruption, sleep loss and consequences on neurocognitive function and health. She is Director of Chronobiology & Sleep Research at CQUniversity Rockhampton campus and an Honorary Professor in Discipline of Psychiatry, Concord Medical School, University of Sydney. She has authored 9 book chapters, and more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles. Prof Rogers was awarded an NHMRC Howard Florey Centenary Research Fellowship in 2004, and a 4-year NSW BioFirst Award, from the NSW Government, and in 2005 was a recipient of a Young Tall Poppy Science Award. She is a co-chief investigator of the NHMRC Enabling Grant supporting the Australasian Sleep Trials Network (ASTN).
Career Achievements: Prof Rogers has presented invited papers and in symposia at national and international conferences, in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Europe and Asia, including at the: Gordon Conference on Circadian Rhythms (2012), Society for Research on Biological Rhythms, United States Associated Professional Sleep Societies, European Sleep Research Society, International Symposium on Night and Shiftwork, Australasian Chronobiology Society, Humans in Space Congress, World Federation of Sleep Research & Sleep Medicine, International Society of Affective Disorders and Australasian Sleep Association meetings (including invited plenary presentation (2011) and invited symposium presentation in 2013). During her time in the U.S., her research was focused on studies investigating physiological and neurobehavioural effects of circadian disruption and sleep restriction in humans, pharmacological and behavioural countermeasures to sleep deprivation and potential impacts of circadian disruption and sleep loss on health status. Her current research is focused on investigating the effects of circadian rhythms, circadian disruption and sleep disturbance on health, neurocognitive functioning, safety, and symptomatology in different patient groups, including those with neurodegenerative (NHMRC project 632689) and neurodevelopmental disorders; developing interventions to increase alertness in shiftworkers (NHMRC project 545871); and the interactions of the sleep homeostatic and circadian systems in modulating the effects of circadian disruption and the effects on circadian adaptation.
Professional Affiliations: Prof Rogers is President of the Australian Society for Medical Research. She is a member of the Research Committee of Academic Board at Central Queensland University, and is Research Director in the School of Business and Law. She currently serves on the Australasian Sleep Association Research Committee and the Australasian Chronobiology Society Executive Committee. She is a previous Director on the Board of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA) as Research Chair (2006-2012) and Founding Director on the Board of the Sleep Health Foundation (2009-2012); and previously served on the Executive Committee of the World Federation of Sleep Research & Sleep Medicine Societies (WFSRSMS - 2003-2207). She is a previous convener of the NSW Branch of the Australian Society for Medical Research and served on the Education Committee of the U.S. Sleep Research Society (2007-2010). She was Chair of the Trainee Program for the 5th WFSRSMS Congress, as well as a member on the Executive Organising Committee and International Program Committee for the 5th worldsleep Congress in Australia, and a member of the International Organising Committee for the 6th worldsleep Congress in 2011.
Professor Rogers has served as a circadian and sleep loss expert on a number of committees for the National Institutes of Health (U.S.), NASA, National Space Biomedical Research Institute, National Transport Commission (Aus), American Academy of Sleep Medicine, NSW, Queensland and Australian Government agencies and the United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and worked with the NSW and Qld Coroners as an expert witness. She has reviewed grants for a range of national and international funding bodies, including the NIH (U.S.), NHMRC, HRC (NZ) and RACP; and has reviewed papers for the Lancet, AJRCCM, SLEEP, Neuropsychopharmacology, Journal of Biological Rhythms and other leading journals.
