Topic:     Soil and water quality - Guess what the numbers mean?

Abstract:      Our understanding of water quality is based upon a laboratory analysis   of the constituents and their proportions in water.  Obviously clean   water has less contaminants than wastewater but how good is our ability   to quantify the concentrations and when is the answer 'right'. The same   questions apply equally to soil. Interlaboratory performance programs   shows a significant variability between sample types and between   laboratories as well as well as within sample variability. How we   evaluate laboratory results depends upon our understanding of sample   variability and the other influences that can affect the   interpretation.  This presentation will examine a range of proficiency   testing program results from laboratory certifying organisations to   clarify our understanding of what the numbers may mean.
