Improving and maintaining productivity of bamboo for quality timber and shoots in Australia and the Philippines.
Dr. Steve Ockerby
The purpose of the trip was three-fold: firstly to ensure that the treatment and measurement protocols being practiced are comparable across experiment sites in the Philippines and Australia; secondly to assist with solutions to problems that may be happening in the trials and lastly to provide training in the use of technologies for soil water and plant nitrogen measurements. The trip will continue the interchange of bamboo information and knowledge. The timing of the trip coincides with the start of the second shoot season.
I was accompanied by Mr Larry McNeven who represented Bamboo Planet Earth’s involvement in the project.
June 11 Depart Rockhampton for Brisbane. The bamboo floorboards from Bamboo Australia, proposed for strength analysis at FPRDI for Bamboo Australia were not available.
June 12 Departed Brisbane for Manila, arrived 7pm. Traveled to Ilocos Norte with Mr Larry McNevin and Drs Stanley and Betty Malab by van – arriving 6am the next morning.
June 13 A sleep in the bahay kubo in Batac, then to the plantation experiment at Payao with Dr Stanley and Betty Malab, Jowie Ramoran and Betty’s third-year soils students. Reviewed experiment progress and protocols; essentially occurring as planned. Discussed the rationale behind the treatments and some soil/plant science. Discussed shoot selection and the problem of rats damaging the new poles when about 3 metres above the ground. Resolved to protect the culms and to replace damaged poles by leaving replacement shoots. Problems with standardizing the depth of micro-gopher readings and the calibration identified and rectified, although further calibration is needed after the soil water characteristics have been determined. A soil plot was prepared to sample volumetric water content at field capacity the next day. Diner was taken beside the South China Sea.
June 14 A tour of the MMSU bamboo processing equipment including the bamboo pole cleaner, bamboo veneering machine and the 5-in-1 processing machine. Re-visited the bamboo plantation at Payao to take soil volumetric water content measurement in one soil profile. Discussed experimental measurement protocols, focusing on the harvesting and evaluation of edible shoots, and the growth physiology of the shoot. Left Batac at 7 pm to travel to Los Banos, dropping Mr Larry McNeven at Manila.
June 15 Meeting with Mrs Ellen O. Montero and Guada P. Delos Santos in support of export procedures and requirements for bamboo products into Australia. Lunch with Dr Bessie Burgos Dir. Technology Outreach and Promotion Division, PCARRD. Travel to Makati.
June 16 Travel to Iloilo to be met by Butch Marquez and Neil Gigare. A general discussion of trial progress over lunch, then a ‘hands and feet’ display and a brief siesta. Further discussion of treatment and measurement protocols, and preparation for field visit.
June 17 Travel to the field experiment in Dumarao, Capiz, stopping off to purchase the first application of agricultural lime (2.5kg per clump). Discussed the treatment protocols, identifying issues in how the culms are marked and the pole-harvesting schedule. Because the number of new poles in 2001 was less than the required treatment protocol, it was decided not to harvest all poles next year, but to leave some to make up the required number of 2 and 3-year old poles. The calibration of the Micro-Gopher was discussed and it was resolved necessary to measure soil water characteristics and re-do the calibration. The use of the Merck Nitrate test was demonstrated and requirements for shoot and leaf testing outlined. It will be necessary to arrange the leaf N% analyses elsewhere.
June 18 Travel to Manila then Cagayan de Oro on Mindanau. Met by Wilma Sistosa, then to DENR office and met Myrna Decipulo and Ermelo Delos Santos the new Assistant Regional Executive Director of Technical Services. Travel to Malaybalay City with Myrna.
June 19 Visit the bamboo experiment in the plantation at Bukidnon. Shoots of D. asper were just starting to appear. Discussed treatment and measurement protocols. Resolved to establish soil water characteristics, and to collect leaf samples for analysis elsewhere. Agreed to add a treatment to halve the rate of potassium chloride application. W then visited Mountain View College where stands of D. asper are growing well and indicative of the resource around Bukidnon.
June 20 Travel to Cagayan de Oro and Manila, then Sydney.
June 21 Arrive Rockhampton
