March 2001 - A training and orientation session was held around Australia. See the trip report by Dr. Nimfa Torreta.
May 2001 - S. Ockerby visited research sites in the Philippines. See the trip report.
May-July 2001 - Chainsaws and safety equipment sent to the Philippine experiments from Australia; made a big difference to ease of thinning bamboo clumps, especially Kawayan tinik that has big thorny branches up to 2 m high from the base. As a consequence, the lower portion of the culm can be harvested and tested for suitability as veneer.
July 2001 - Severe typhoon damages the bamboo in the experiment at Batac, Ilocos Norte.
July 2001 - D. Midmore visited research site in Malaybalay, The Philippines. Read the trip report.
October 2001 - Planned visit by S. Ockerby to the Philippines postponed.
October 2001 - S. Ockerby visited research sites in Darwin. Experimental protocols were finalised for the 3 sites and thinning of previously unmanaged clumps was done - hot work.
October 2001 - S. Ockerby visited bamboo growers in Western Australia, to assess the species suitability and growth potential of bamboo. Visited Bob and Judy Gretton at Denmark, Peter Hicks at Yarri Springs, Balingup, Ron and Judy Wilson at Albany, Peter Form and Maleeya at Hillside, Porongurup.
October -December 2001 - extraction of nitrate from the leaves of bamboo was found to be impractical so measurements were done on the nitrate content of bamboo shoot sap. The nitrate range was measurable with Merck RQflex meters so purchases have proceeded with the aim to develop simple in-field monitoring of N status of the clump.
December 2001 - S. Ockerby spent much time at Eumundi implementing the experiment at Bamboo Australia. Extremely dry conditions delay the start of the shoot season. Dams are empty, so irrigation treatments are affected.
February 2002 - A combined tree/bamboo/grass experimental system to utilise nutrients and water from treated sewerage effluent planted at Yeppoon in Central Queensland in collaboration with the Livingstone Shire Council.
February 2002 - The first annual project review meeting was held in the Philippines (Los Banos and Iloilo) between 24 February and 1 March. A contingent of 7 bamboo people from Australia and one representative from INBAR met with collaborators from all four locations in The Philippines. Read the trip report by Steve Ockerby.
February 2002 - Samples of bamboo species Bambusa balcooa, Gigantachloa robusta and Dendrocalamus asper were taken to the Philippines to assess their suitability for veneering. Samples were returned to Australia.
May 2002 - David Midmore visited experimental sites in The Philippines.
June 2002 - Steve Ockerby visited the Philippines to confirm treatment and measurement protocols prior to the second season.
