Description: 10-year old Bambusa oldhamii plantation with 7m row and 5m clump spacing. Replicated, randomised block experiment with treatments comparing irrigation, culm spacing, thinning time and nitrogen management. Uses a 4-4 culm thinning regime.
Progress: Unmanaged clumps were thinned in July 2001 with treatments first imposed December 2001. Irrigation system and tensiometers (15, 30, 50 cm depths) installed. Limited dry-season irrigation water available. Late start to wet-season rain so few shoots during January 2002. The wet-season failed and there was limited irrigation water; consequently few clumps produced the required 5 shoot to be retained for timber culms. Culm thinning during July will have to be adjusted accordingly, so to retain the required treatment clump. Shoot nitrate N testing was not possible, however, leaf N concentration was measured. Tensiometers were installed during January 2002, and subsequently monitored. Soil moisture characteristics were recorded for the 0-30cm profile only.

Description:2.5 year old Dendrocalamus latiflorus trial planting with 8m row and 7m clump spacing. Randomised block with 3 replications of 3 irrigation treatments and 2 fertilizer treatments. This trial has a 4-4-4 thinning schedule.
Progress:Initial thinning of 2 year old clumps in June 2001 to 12 culms per clump. The diameters of all remaining culms were recorded to test uniformity. Fertilizer treatments commenced after leaf analysis in October 2001. Shoot harvest and shoot selection ongoing during wet season. Poor monsoon conditions have slowed shooting. Irrigation monitoring to commence March 2002.

Description:3.5 year old Dendrocalamus asper (pai tong keo) plantation with 12m row and 6m clump spacing. This plantation is organically managed. Randomised block with 3 replications of 2 irrigation, 3 fertilizer and 3 thinning treatments.
Progress: Thinning treatments imposed in October 2001. Diameters of all remaining culms were recorded to test uniformity. After leaf testing in October, organic fertilizer was applied to the treatments. Shoot harvest and shoot selection conducted by grower. Irrigation system and monitoring gear installed during March 2002.

Description:3.5 year old Dendrocalamus latiflorus clumps planted 6m apart in a single windbreak row with 3 replications of 2 irrigation, 3 fertilizer and 3 thinning treatments.
Progress: Thinning treatments imposed in August 2001. Diameters of all remaining culms were recorded to test uniformity. Fertilizer treatments were applied after leaf analysis in October. Follow up testing showed excellent treatment response to nitrogen inputs. Shoot harvest and shoot selection conducted by grower. Irrigation monitoring gear installed during March 2002.

Description:8-year old D. latiflorus grown with wide intra-clump spacing.
Progress: No applied treatments but reference data to be taken on growth, culm elongation and nutrient content for this species in this environment.

Description: 3-year old Bambusa blumeana (Kawayan tinik) plantation on sloping land with a 7m x 7m clump spacing.
Progress: A replicated randomized block experiment with treatments comparing thinning, irrigation and nitrogen management was set up in June 2001. A topographical map was done and an irrigation system instaled. By June 2002, measurement protocols had been finalised, and equipment to measure soil water and shoot nitrate-nitrogen obtained and installed. One problem that is being considered is the impact of acid soil pH, reportedly 4.7, so remedial treatment applying agricultural lime to all clumps during 2002 is being done.

Description: 20 year old natural stands of Bambusa blumeana (Kawayan tinik) on farmers landholdings.
Progress: Previously unmanaged clumps of unknown age were treated to compare thinning on a 6-6-6 system or 8-8 with and without fertiliser or mulch with unmanaged controls. The 5 treatments are replicated 5 times on 5 closely located landholdings. The experiment forms the basis of a wider extension project being developed for Region 6.

Description: 10-year old Bambusa blumeana (Kawayan tinik) plantation on sloping land with a 7m x 7m clump spacing.
Progress: A replicated randomized block experiment with 13 treatments comparing thinning, irrigation, nitrogen management and mulching was set up in June 2001. Another experiment was set up in farmers field with 5 treatments comparing clump thinning, fertilizer and irrigation. The diameter of 1-2 yrs old culms was not significantly different between treatments. Shoot production per clump during the shoot season was 6. Currently soil moisture, irrigation and shoot emergence and growth are being monitored. Soil organic matter build up for the last 9 years of the bamboo plantation is very poor. The project in Ilocos Norte has made a major stride in implementation by the setting up two experimental sites. The commitment of the Ilocos Norte group in the project, including the Project Research Officer contributed much to the timely setting of the experiments. Likewise the provision of the equipment (chainsaw, sprayers, Micro-Gopher) from Australia allowed the research to move faster. Significant events so far include a typhoon during the 2001 shooting season that cause major damage to clumps, and the impact of rodents that chew new culms at the height of the thorns.

Description:16-year old Dendrocalamus asper plantation on slightly sloping country in the highlands with a 7-10 m clump spacing.
Progress: A replicated randomized block experiment with 10 (11 after June 2002) treatments comparing thinning, fertiliser management and mulching was set up in June 2001. The aims are to rehabilitate existing aged and damaged bamboo stands, and to develop management practices to maintain high productivity of shoots and timber. Thinning strategies in this experiment leave a much larger number of poles each year because of the species and age of the plantation.

Description:The timber qualities of bamboo from research experiments in the Philippines and Australia will be assessed. In particular, the effects of different management techniques will be compared leading to the use of bamboo in veneer and formed board products. Emphasis will be placed on the anatomical, chemical, physical and mechanical properties of kawayan tinik from the Ilocos Norte plantation.
Progress: Poles from the experiment at Batac were sampled and tested to establish benchmark data for timber qualities from unmanaged clumps of Kawayan tinik. The data will be used to determine the extent of improvement on bamboo properties as various silvicultural treatments are applied.
