AgSIP #13 workshops

2005 Production Economics Workshop

Workshop Purpose:

  • Access farm level impacts of improving resource management.
  • Identifying any net private costs of improving environmental management at the farm level.
  • Showcasing to NRM groups and other stakeholders the range of economic tools that can be used.
  • Provide a mechanism for case studies in Queensland to be assembled.
  • Provide a forum for agricultural and resource economists in Queensland to meet.

The key aim of the workshop is to report on a number of case study examples of economic analysis from work done in Queensland and elsewhere.

2006 Market Based Instruments - Designer Carrots Symposium

Symposium Objectives

The symposium is being jointly organised by the Queensland Government social and Economic State-level Investment Project (SE05) team, the Sustainable Agriculture State-level Investment projects (AG13) team and Queensland branch of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society. The overall aim for all groups is to share the information on the design and implementation of incentives mechanisms with an emphasis on market-based instruments.

In particular the symposium seeks to:

  • Share learning from participants experiences in innovative delivery of incentives on the ground
  • Evaluate incentive trials undertaken by regional NRM groups in Queensland
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of SEO5 in supporting regional NRM groups to implement incentive programmes
  • Provide expert information on competitive conservation tenders
  • Support networking opportunities for participants

A key focus of the Symposium is to share the learnings of regional natural resource management bodies and researchers involved in the current incentives trials in Queensland, which have been funded under the Social and Economic State-level Investment Project, SE05.

The Symposium will also involve a number of other experts who can relate the Queensland outcomes to other Australian case studies and knowledge. All participants will be involved in group activities over the two days so that people can share their knowledge, experience and learnings. The focus of the two days will be on identifying how incentive mechanisms (particularly competitive tenders) can be implemented successfully at a case study level.

2007 Economic Valuation Workshop

Target audience: NRM managers; policy/project decision makers

Workshop aim: The AgSIP #13 project has developed a range of material on the costs and benefits of improving NRM outcomes in regional Queensland. The information can be used to develop an economic valuation of regional investment strategies and projects. The aim of this workshop is to highlight the need for such information and provide a practical framework in which in can be applied.

Workshop objectives:

1. To outline how decisions about allocating resources to policies and projects to improve NRM outcomes are made. All decisions implicitly assume that benefits outweigh costs, even if there is no economic valuation.

2. Outline some of the economic tools available in policy/project evaluation and the need for non-market valuation.

3. Present the findings of Ag SIP #13 results on private (farm level) costs and public (community level) benefits of improved NRM outcomes in Queensland catchments.

4. Present other case studies that assess public benefits associated with the interaction of agriculture and the environment.

5. Provide practical examples of how non-market values can be applied in decision making.

6. Help NRM Groups to justify future investments in NRM improvements.
