Minerals Down Under Flagship - the Future Sustainability of Australia's Mineral Industry

(P3 Regions in transition: Regional land use change and the minerals lifecycle - Case study - Surat Basin)

This is a collaborative research project between CSIRO, Curtin University, CQUniversity and Australian National University (2009-2012). CQUniversity team members include Lindsay Greer, Professor John Rolfe, Dr Galina Ivanova, and Dr Delwar Akbar. Research objectives are:

  • To understand regional sensitivities associated with the exploration and development of future operations;
  • To investigate how land use changes in affected communities - of interest and of place - have been negotiated, in order to identify how these processes can be improved;
  • To Develop improved methods for measuring, monitoring and assessing the social and economic impacts of mining at the regional level;
  • To Develop strategies to enable the delivery of positive social, economic and environmental legacies from future mining operations;
  • To Identify the appropriate policy and engagement mechanisms for managing land use change at a regional scale and for maximising longer term benefits of mining for regional communities.
