Environmental Economics Programme

The Environmental Economics Programme undertakes a range of research, contract research and consultancy activities across a wide range of natural resource and environmental issues in the region, as well as linking in closely with a number of agricultural production issues. The Programme works closely with other research groups both within and outside the university

Aim

Provide a range of assessment tools and case studies relating to the interaction of society and economic systems with environmental issues.

Subsidiary aims:

  • Understand the economic reasons why environmental problems occur in the region,
  • Conduct research studies assessing the value of environmental tradeoffs,
  • Develop non-market valuation techniques, particularly Choice Modelling and Contingent Valuation,
  • Evaluate the range of regulatory, social and economic tools available to address environmental issues,
  • Design appropriate market-based instruments to improve resource allocation and use,
  • Develop greater awareness in the region of environmental economic techniques and case studies.

Materials, resources and reports
