The Koala Research Centre of Central Queensland is a community funded research program managed cooperatively by the Rockhampton Regional Council, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, CQUniveristy and the Central Queensland Koala Volunteers. The Centre is hosted by the Centre for Environmental Management at CQUniversity. The centre was established to support on-going research and to initiate new research projects on koala biology, habitat requirements and the effect on koala populations of rural, urban and industrial developments in Central Queensland. The Koala Research Centre has been operating since 1994.
A Steering Committee provides strategic advice to the Koala Research Centre. Members of the committee are the key stakeholders the Rockhampton Regional Council, the Department of Environment and Resource Management, CQUniveristy and the Central Queensland Koala Volunteers. The steering committee meets annually.
Day to day management is provided by CQUniversity through the Centre for Environmental Management. The Centre Director (Professor John Rolfe) acts as the executive officer of the Koala Research Centre. CQUniversity provides financial oversight. Ethical oversight is provided by CQUniversity's Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee. Dr Alistair Melzer is the Research Program Leader.
