Thesis title: Identifying the characteristics required by clinical leaders in mental health nursing and how they are developed

Summary: Investigating the characteristics of effective clinical leaders in mental health nursing, this study intends to examine how effective clinical leaders in this setting are formed and shaped. The study will have two phases. Phase 1 will involve interviewing mental health nurses about clinical leadership, eliciting their thoughts and experiences of clinical leaders. Phase 2 of this study will involve interviews with those staff identified in phase 1 as effective clinical leaders. These interviews will focus more on identifying the journeys and experiences of these staff and how they believe they formed the characteristic of an effective clinical leader. A grounded theory methodology was chosen as this study aims to generate new knowledge and insights into an area of mental health nursing that is poorly researched.
