About Us

The Centre for Mental Health Nursing Innovation (CMHNI) reflects a partnership between CQUniversity’s Institute for Health and Social Science Research (IHSSR) and the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONM). The aim of CMHNI is to promote CQUniversity’s strengths and achievements in mental health nursing and to strengthen engagement between the university, industry partners and research collaborators.

Mental health nursing is one of CQUniversity’s strongest performing research areas. As such, CMHNI will focus on:

  • The national and international recognition of CQUniversity researchers for their innovative research in the areas of physical health of people diagnosed with a mental illness; consumer participation in mental health education and service delivery; triage; and, mental health nursing education.
  • Advances in learning and teaching, including increased mental health content within the undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing, the development and introduction of a major stream in mental health nursing, and a Master of Mental Health Nursing program.
  • The appointment of an academic with lived experience of mental health service use. This is an innovative role reflecting State and Commonwealth policy and leads the broader mental health sector.
  • The appointment of Professor Brenda Happell as Engaged Research Chair in Mental Health Nursing.
