SIG: Health and Community Engagement and Education (HCEE)

Dr Wendy Madsen

Convenor

Purpose

To investigate the relationships between formal and informal education, community engagement and health.

Strategic Deliverables

The research generated from this SIG clearly aligns with CQUniversity’s Strategic Plan on a number of fronts, including community engagement, research and learning and teaching, although this latter aspect is much broader in its perspective than the aspirations outlined in the Strategic Plan to incorporate informal and community based education. In this context, ‘education’ is understood to be a process that is developmental and transformative. Within an ecological framework, such education can occur at an individual, organisational, community and population level, but in all instances the learning is socially constructed and dependent on engagement. Furthermore, while the relationship between formal education and health is well established, less is known about the influence of more informal avenues of learning. From this perspective, this SIG will research the interplay between health, community engagement and education.
