CQUniversity's graduate attributes distinguish between generic skills and intellectual nurturing. This distinction might be explored in terms of the relationship between interests and values. While interests could be understood in terms of the dominant, external, governing forces of society, values are less definite, more personal and intrinsic. When interests, such as hose associated with the governance of neo-liberalism, become too dominant, values tend to be compromised and subsumed within these. Yet promoting values in education is a key aspect of transformative learning, which provides a means of contributing to the emerging interests of the knowledge economy. I draw on the ideas of Foucault and the experiences of STEPS students to explore the ways in which generating critical values is vital in negotiating and resisting dominant interests and providing spaces for thinking otherwise.
Geoff Danaher teaches in the STEPS bridging program at CQUniversity. He is currently convenor of the Inclusive Education Special Interest Group within LTERC. He has research interests in transformative learning, Foucault and creative writing.
