Abstract

In October of 2010 CQUniversity trademarked a unique form of simulation, termed MASK ED (KRS simulation). This innovative and unique approach to simulation is gaining much interest at a national and international level. The following presentation will outline the history and a brief introduction to the pedagogy behind this technique. Preliminary findings from a learning and teaching grant will also confirm the impact that this approach has had on the learner. The presentation will also outline the future directions and possibilities for CQUniversity, Australia.

Speaker Bio

A/Prof Kerry Reid -Searl (PhD, RN, RM, MClin Ed, MRCNA, FCN)

A/Prof Kerry Reid Searl is Senior Lecturer in the Undergraduate Nursing Programme at CQUniversity Rockhampton Campus. Since completing her nursing and midwifery education, Kerry has gained a Bachelor of Health Science, a Masters of Clinical Education and her PhD. Kerry has had extensive nursing experience in the Torres Strait and regional Queensland. She has been involved in undergraduate nursing education for the past 19 years. Most recently she has become known nationally and internationally for her pioneering work with high fidelity patient silicone simulation as a strategy for teaching in nursing education. Since initiating this strategy in 2008, Kerry has won a best paper award at the International Clinical Skills Conference and an Innovation award for her presentation at Queensland Health Conference in 2009 and in 2010 was named Pearson/Australian Nurse Teacher Society- Nurse Teacher of the Year. Kerry is also well published in international journals for her work around medication safety and has been the principal author, as well co author, of several nursing texts books which have been sold nationally and internationally.
