Community based health and education programs have been evident since times of antiquity, although then they were aimed only at the gentry. In the last two centuries, the broader community has participated in such programs. HeartStart is an example of a community based cardiac rehabilitation that has a strong focus on education. Unlike formal education programs such as found in schools and tertiary facilities, community based education will often have a structured component but more frequently works on an informal basis. This paper outlines some preliminary results of a research project into HeartStart, particularly those related to education, along with some lessons being learnt by the researcher herself.
After 15 years of researching the history of nursing and health care, Dr Wendy Madsen has recently started focusing on health promotion and community education and engagement. This is a natural progression based on her background in human movement studies (many years ago), nursing, history and learning and teaching, in particular transformative learning principles and practices. Wendy has been teaching into the Bachelor of Health Promotion program since 2007 and has been instrumental in developing the Master of Health Promotion program to be offered from 2011.
