In addition, they will talk about the role that DE plays to meet the needs of student, as well as the major factors and concerns affecting DE at higher education levels in their context.

Professor Fredric Michael Litto - Brazilian Association for Distance Education

Dr Fredric Litto recently retired after thirty-six years as professor of communications at the University of São Paulo, where he founded and directed, from 1989 to 2006, the "School of the Future" [www.futuro.usp.br], a self-sustaining research laboratory investigating web based digital learning materials and practices. He is currently in his fourth four-year term as president of the Brazilian Association for Distance Education-ABED, a learned society with 2,400 members, and which in September 2006 hosted the 22nd ICDE World Conference of Distance Education in Rio de Janeiro [www.abed.org.br]. At the end of 2007, he was elected to the six-member Executive Committee of the ICDE, to serve from 2008 to 2011. He is a member of the editorial boards of American Journal of Distance Education (USA); Advanced Technology and Learning (USA); Open Learning (U.K.); International Review of Research in Open & Distance Learning (Canada); and Revista Iberoamericana de Educación a Distancia (Spain). He has served as a consultant to the World Bank, and is a member of the ICDE Task-Force on OERs. In the second semester of 2006 he was the "Rio Branco Scholar" in Education & Technology in the Institute for Education of the University of London, researching the issues involved in OERs-Open Educational Resources, in developing countries.
Dr Stavros P. Xanthopoylos - Fundação Getulio Vargas

Currently, Dr Xanthopoylos is the Dean of FGV Online - Distance Education Unit at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), former Associate Dean of the OneMBA program at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV-EAESP) and member of the Executive Committee of the five-school partnership program. Xanthopoylos started his higher education career as a lecturer in 1987, and has been a member of the Production and Operations Management Department, teaching the required MBA course, "Operations Management," since 1994. He has been involved with distance education since 1995, as an author, coordinator and lecturer. He is also responsible for developing, coordinating and conducting Executive Corporate MBAs at firms such as Embraer, Braskem SA and Odebrecht Engenharia e Construção. Xanthopoylos worked as a consultant for both the private and public sectors, conducting mainly knowledge management, quality and operations management and strategy projects in Brazil, Europe and Southern Asia, between 1986 and 2007. He teaches and represents FGV at the BVLA program (Building Ventures in Latin America), a joint effort with Harvard Business School and four other Brazilian institutions

Professor Marta Mena - Universidad de Morón

Marta Mena is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy, Universidad de Morón. Currently, Marta is the Director of the Distance Education of Universidad de Morón and is also a member of the International Council for Open and Distance Education. Previously, she was the Vice-President of the World Distance Education Committee for Latin America and the president of the Argentinean Distance Education Association. Marta Mena has held numerous teaching positions in Argentina and Spain, including at Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Universidad de Salamanca (Spain). Her knowledge and experience on distance education has been transferred to other academics through domestic and international workshops, as well as conferences. Her research has been published in important international journals related to distance education. In terms of professional experience, she has been involved in different projects related to distance education, such as the design of distance training programs for organizations of Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and Latin-America, among others.
Associate Professor Sara Isabel Perez - University of Quilmes

Associate Professor Perez is the Academic Secretary of the University of Quilmes. Previously, she was the director of the program "e-University" at University of Quilmes and has held the position of leader in different projects related to distance education, such as the one on "E-learning as a means of communication and education" (National University of Quilmes). Her teaching experience covers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in subjects related to language and distance education. Dr Sara Isabel Perez has published 1 book and 11 journal articles in domestic and international journals in topics related to distance education. She has also delivered more than 47 presentations in important domestic and international conferences, in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico.
