There has been so much happening at the Appleton Institute that it's difficult to know where to start:

Also, we have a set of young worker characters designed by local artist, Dan McGuinness set to help with the project. Look out for them on our facebook, twitter and website pages.
It is known that sleep has negative effects on one’s mental health and that during the school week students get less sleep. We believe that students try to “catch up” on sleep over the weekend, but never catch up enough over the whole school term.
The Beyond Blue project, run by Dr. Sarah Blunden, aims to see if sleep loss across the school term is found to predict poor mental health in adolescents, and further, if sleep loss across the school term is found to be related to increases in poor mental health. Check out the Beyond Blue Project page and also the new Beyond Blue Project facebook page for more information!
The ASH project has just announced the testing dates for Victoria throughout 2013, these will be held at Box Hill, East of Melbourne. Check out the ASH project page for the latest info!
We have several new PhD and Honours students joining us in 2013. Our four summer scholars are busy preparing for the first sleep study of the year, and the first sleep study to be conducted in the newly built Appleton Institute Sleep Laboratory. The study will see four local artists coming in to the laboratory to be sleep deprived, before being tested on a number of scientific and creative measures - while also blogging to the world about their experiences. See story above for more information.
As 2013 kicks off, along with a host of new projects and our official launch party, we will soon have a new group of Psychology Honours students starting their research projects with us. David Zammit, one of the 2012 honours group, shares his experience from last year below"
"Forth year Psychology was challenging from the get go, especially considering I was so far away from the main University campus in Rockhampton. Though initially I was confronted by this prospect of studying externally, everybody at the Appleton Institute were welcoming, helpful and definitely made the pressures of the year much more manageable and even fun. Also having a small group of other Honours students studying there made for a closely knit team of much needed support and help. One highlight for me was residential school, which was held in Rockhampton and gave us the opportunity to meet our lecturers and fellow students. However, nothing quite beats the feeling of submitting a 100 page thesis of which so much effort, stress (and suffering) and time was invested in (though waiting for the final mark isn’t as great a feeling). Overall, Honours was a great experience where I learnt a lot about myself and the discipline of Psychology as well as having made many a friendship along the way. I give the experience 4 stars!"
Happy New Year and welcome to 2013 !
There is a lot of activity going on at the Appleton Institute this month. The building work is close to completion, thus we are now fully branded with the CQUniversity colours and signage. Also the new 6-bed sleep laboratory has been completed, along with our distance education facilities for students (lecture and tutorial rooms, computer pools and more).
We have 4 summer scholars working on the first sleep deprivation studies of 2013, and the first in the new laboratory. We also have 10 new honours students who are soon to start work on their research projects in many different areas of Psychology. Of course, we also have a number of new projects starting after the tsunami of grant funding successes in the last part of 2012!
Not only that but we have a PhD student in the Beach Socceroos team playing for Australia in the middle east !
Stay tuned for more updates and news on all of the developments, and the official Appleton Institute launch.
Researchers at the Appleton Institute are starting a new project to investigate work health and safety for young workers. The project will ask young people aged 12-25 about their experiences with work, including accidents, injuries, attitudes and more.
Too many young South Australians suffer illness, injury or even death as a result of their work.
This project will develop a strategy for work health and safety for young workers, by finding out what young people know about health and safety at work.
Appleton Institute researchers Dr. Sophie Rainbird, Associate Professor Verna Blewett and Dr. Jessica Paterson are involved in the projoect - pictured here with Meegan Brotherton from Safework SA.
