Step 5 - Develop a Research Proposal

This is the most important part of your application.  Developing your research proposal should be done in direct cooperation with your proposed Principal Supervisor and the School of Graduate Research (SGR). A minimum of one (1) page outlining the proposed program must be attached to the formal application. An outline should consist the elements as described below. The emphasis to be placed on certain elements will vary depending upon the field of research.

Title:

 

A short descriptive title of the program (this information may also be recorded as the topic of research).

 

Supervisor(s):

 

Where known, indicate the name(s) of proposed supervisor(s). A short curriculum vitae to include qualification, current position and employment history, should be provided for supervisors who are not members of University staff.

 

Synopsis:

 

A brief synopsis of approximately 100 words describing the research proposal.

 

Background:

 

A short description of the background to the problem should be provided with particular attention being paid to the significance of the proposed project.

 

Objectives:

 

Provide a statement of project objectives in relation to the previously described background.

 

Proposed Schedule:

The study and reading program, literature review, research program and thesis drafting should be scheduled as appropriate. Care should be taken in defining what may constitute prescribed units of study which must be undertaken and satisfactorily completed as a condition of candidacy
