Begin by identifying significant terms and concepts from the assessment task - this should help to define your focus. Assessment tasks often contain command words (e.g. analyse, compare, discuss). You should also consider these words, as they direct the approach you should take to the task.
To explore your task further:
Consider other terms or concepts that might be associated with the task. Depending on the task, this may involve checking your textbook and/or study guide, and perhaps doing some background reading. You might also like to brainstorm some ideas about the task.
If you are having difficulty understanding some of the terms or concepts, try using a subject-specific dictionary.
If you need background information to get you started, check if there is a relevant subject-specific encyclopedia. To do this, search the Library Catalogue using a combination of relevant keywords e.g. encyclopedia AND psychology.
Organise your ideas - you could try using lists, concept maps or tables. This can help to highlight what information you will need.
Check LibGuides as some course guides focus on assessment tasks.
By exploring the assessment task, you will gain knowledge and ideas which can then support your search for information.
