Project Scope

The underlying philosophy for the redevelopment of the Rockhampton Library was to provide a flexible and focused learning environment for clients and to provide staff with a pleasant, safe and efficient work environment. As the main library, the central functions of Administration, Information Services, Resource and Access Services and Lending Services are based in Rockhampton. The Art Collection Office is also located in the Rockhampton Library building.

CQUniversity Library's vision for the Rockhampton Library is for it to be an integrated learning environment for all members of the University community. The library provides pedagogically focused space, technology, and expertise to support individual and collaborative learning and research activities. It ideally should "form part of a campus-wide learning environment ... which is designed predominantly upon pedagogical principles." (Webster, K 2009, ‘The research library as a learning space: new opportunities for campus development', in D Radcliffe, et al. (eds) Learning spaces in higher education: Positive outcomes by design, University of Queensland, St Lucia)

It includes contemporary and innovative spaces that meet current and future client and staff needs as well as fostering innovative partnerships amongst students, academic staff,  library, learning support and technology providers on campus. Network access is ubiquitous within the building and its immediate surrounds.

Q.  Why did the University need to refurbish the Library?

A.  The Library opened in 1978 and has been delivering best-practice traditional Library services to the University for over thirty years. However, with technological changes and a stronger emphasis on electronic resources and collaborative learning spaces, a rearrangement of the spaces was timely. The new floor plans have opened up the space and provided more seating for library users, especially those with laptops. Our vision for the building is for it to be an integrated learning environment for all members of the University community.

Q.  How much did the refurbishment cost and where did the money come from?

A.  The total project budget for the new Library was $6 million. It was funded from the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations' Education Investment Fund - Teaching and Learning Capital Fund for Higher Education.
