early bird catches the wormThe Early Bird Catches the Worm

Language: Italian (English Subtitles)

Starring: Elio Germano, Laura Chiatti, Martina Stella, Carlo Monni, Gerardo Amato, Corrado Fortuna
Director: Francesco Patierno

Baldini studied finance and was expected to pursue a career in banking, but his heart was never in it, and when he is offered a job at a radio station in Milan he jumps at the chance. Baldini soon finds himself teamed up with impulsive funnyman Rosario on the station's morning show, and to his surprise he quickly becomes one of the nation's most popular on-air personalities. But with his newfound riches and long afternoons to kill, Marco's casual gambling habit starts to become an addiction.

Loosely adapted from Baldini's autobiographical book Il giocatore (The Player), this elegant, acidic comedy offers an engaging, self-ironic commentary as it traces the highs and lows of Baldini's double existence, unfolding against a convincing backdrop of life during the penultimate decade of the 20th century.

Mid-August Lunch

Language: Italian (English subtitles)
Genre: Comedy/Drama

Starring: Gianni Di Gregorio, Valeria De Franciscis, Marina Cacciotti, Maria Cali
Director: Gianni Di Gregorio

A man in his sixties, lives in a small apartment in the Trastevere district of Rome with his 93-year-old mother, Valeria (Valeria De Franciscis), an arrangement which severely restricts his social life. He owes money to the body corporate, but the building manager comes up with a bright idea - the money can be waived if Gianni will look after his elderly mother for a couple of nights during the August holiday. Before long, Gianni finds himself trying to take care of four very strong-willed old ladies.

Reminiscent at times of the great Ealing comedy, THE LADYKILLERS, the disarmingly modest movie delights in the ways in which the beleaguered hero has to deal with the feisty old women left in his care. (David Stratton At the movies)

Genre: Drama

Starring: Vincent Lindon, Audrey Dana, Firat Ayverdi
Director: Philippe Lioret

Bilal is a 17 year old Kurdish boy from Iraq who sets off on an adventure-filled journey accross Europe to England to see his love who lives there. He finally reaches Calais, but how do you cover 32 kilometres of the English Channel when you can't swim? The boy soon discovers that his trip won't be as easy as he imagined... The community of struggling illegal aliens in Calais is captured with authenticity, from the point of view of people who arrived there knowing nothing about France. This immigrant drama, with wonderful performances by the actors, is a strong story which uses documentary austerity and minimalist style to create a great emotional impact

The HedgehogThe Hedgehog

Language: French
Genre: Drama, Comedy, Romance

Starring: Renee Michel, Garance le Guillermic, Togo Igawa, Anne Brochet, Wladimir Yordanoff
Director: Mona Achache

Meanwhile, several floors up, eleven-year-old Paloma Josse is determined to avoid the pampered and vacuous future laid out for her, and in an effort to show how absurd her life is decides to film the people around her. The Hedgehog is a moving story about love, life and the beauty of unexpected friendships.

"A fine and delicate French film." Paul Byrnes, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
