Happy Go LuckyLanguage: English
Starring: Sally Hawkins, Alexis Zegerman, Andrea Riseborough, Samuel Roukin, Sinead Matthews, Kate O'Flynn, Sarah Niles, Eddie Marsan and Joseph Kloska
Director: Mike Leigh
Poppy (Sally Hawkins) is a life-loving, irrepressibly cheerful, Pollyanna-type primary school teacher who is thirty years old, single, and infinitely optimistic and accepting. Whilst Poppy's sense of humour gets the better of her at times, she takes her role of working with children very seriously and deals with things as they come along, demonstrating the possibilities that follow as a result. She lives with her best friend and flatmate Zoe (Alexis Zegerman) in London. She is tested by a repressed driving instructor with anger problems (Eddie Marsan), and tests him in turn. She has exciting flamenco lessons, an encounter with a homeless man, a row with her pregnant sister, and a love-affair with the social worker guiding one of her students.

In just a few days, Sophie will be married, and Donna will stand by bittersweetly as her little girl takes flight. When Sophie walks down the aisle on that fateful day, she wants her father to hand her off. Now, as three key figures from Donna's past return to the picturesque Mediterranean shores they all walked 20 years prior, one beautiful bride will discover the secret of her past while one lonely mother finds out that it's never too late for a little romance.

A romantic comedy set in a Beirut beauty saloon, the "Si Belle", which while comfortable, has definitely seen better days. The film gives us a glimpse into the secret lives of five women whose paths cross at the parlour and their quests to find happiness. Among them is Layale who owns the salon. She still lives at home and is hiding a furtive affair with a wealthy married man. Also in the group is a 40-ish divorced actress, Jamale, who's terrified of aging and the only Muslim , Nisrine, who's worried her fiancé will discover she's not a virgin. While it might sound like a cross between "Sex In The City" and "Beauty Shop" or maybe a Middle East answer to a Hollywood "chick flick", most critics agree it has much more to offer the viewer. You be the judge. And the title, that refers to the hot syrupy sugar substance that can be eaten as caramel, but is used like hot wax to remove hair.

In trying to please his demanding wife by putting in a transfer request to the south of France, Post Office administrator Phillippe Abrams's (Kad Merad) plans come undone when he is accused of impersonating a 'handicapped person' when applying. As punishment, Abrams is transferred to Berques up north, which is the last place he wants to be. Here the locals have their own way of doing things, and saying things. The townspeople speak a dialect called Ch'ti, which to Philippes ears is little more than gibberish. Despite the 'cold' and the indecipherable accents, Abrams starts to like the place; so much so that he never wants to come home again. The director's own turn as a particularly dim-witted mailman is also a piece of terrific comedy.

EASY VIRTUE directed by Stephen Elliott (Adventures of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert") is adapted from an early Noel Coward comedy of the same name. It's been described as a story of Old World Manners (England ) vs New World Freedom (USA). Set in 1929 it tells of the arrival home of John Whitaker and his new wife whom he married while on an overseas jaunt. John (Ben Barnes) is the eldest son of a prim and proper English family.. his wife, Larita (Jessica Biel) is an American...not only American, but a divorced, feisty American female race car driver. Needless to say John's mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) is not very impressed with her new daughter-in-law. In fact his father (Colin Firth) is the only member of the family who seems to approve and he's suffering from shell shock after the War. Larita tries hard to impress Mrs Whitaker but nothing seems to work and then one of the sisters discovers something scandalous from her new sister-in-law's past.
"Fizzing with droll humour, pithy observations on the class system and some brilliantly acidic one-liners, it's wall-to-wall wit on a grand scale." -- UK Mirror

Three siblings must come to terms with their mother's mortality as they decide what to do with her valuable belongings in this warm family drama from filmmaker Olivier Assayas. Helene Berthier (Edith Scob) is about to turn 75, and her children are gathering at her home in the country for a party. Adrienne (Juliette Binoche) has flown in from New York City, where she lives with her boyfriend James (Kyle Eastwood). Jeremie (Jeremie Renier) has taken a rare break from his globe-trotting business interests to stop by with his wife (Valerie Bonneton). And Frederic (Charles Berling), the only one who lives close enough to visit regularly, has also come with his spouse Lisa (Dominique Reymond). Helene has inherited a large and valuable collection of art from her brother, and with her health beginning to fail, she approaches Frederic and asks that he, Jeremie and Adrienne come up with a plan to deal with the pieces after her death. Frederic wants to keep the collection together and see if they can persuade a gallery to purchase and present them as a set. Jeremie and Adrienne have other ideas, but as he's pondering a business opportunity in China and she's planning on settling in America for good, they don't have as much influence over the final decision as Frederic. L'heure d'ete (aka Summer Hours) was produced in part by the celebrated French art gallery Musee d'Orsay, and was one of a handful of films created to honor the museum in its twentieth anniversary year. -- Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
