Travelling or Working Away from CQUniversity?

Listed below are some different ways staff can connect to the internet while away from CQUniversity.

Internet access is available at most Australian Universities

EduRoam is a world wide education roaming service. It provides staff and students with a secure wireless internet connection while visiting other Universities. Further information about EduRoam is available online.

Wi-Fi Hotspots

Wi-Fi Hotspots are wireless internet access points that are widely available around most city areas. They can be accessed using a laptop or mobile phone at many places including: Coffee Shops, McDonald's, Motels, Internet Cafes, Airports and Libraries.

Some are free to use and others charge a fee. To find out more information about a particular Wi-Fi Hotspot it is best to ask at the establishment.

Motel Broadband

Motel Broadband can be organised at the reception desk of most motels and hotels. To connect a laptop to the internet, staff will need to use a network cable. Once the laptop has been connected to the wall port, it should automatically detect the motel's broadband connection.

Accessing wireless broadband from University laptops

Staff that travel often may need to regularly access the internet from their laptop. This can be arranged by purchasing a USB modem. The USB modem is simply plugged into a laptop (using the USB port) and then connects to the internet via the Telstra Next G network. Information about purchasing a USB modem and setting up a monthly data plan is available on this webpage.

Using the internet via a mobile phone

Staff will need to set up a data plan if they would like to access the internet via their mobile phone. There are various data plans available and each specifies a certain amount of data usage (i.e. internet uploads, downloads and data transfer). Further information about setting up a data plan for a University-owned mobile phone is available online.

International Roaming

International roaming is not initially activated on CQUniversity mobile phones. If staff are travelling overseas for University business, they will need approval from their supervisor and financial delegate to activate international roaming. To activate international roaming please contact the ITD Service Centre.

Please note that overseas call costs are significantly higher than in Australia. Indicative call costs from the destination country are available on this Telstra International Roaming web page.

Data usage (internet access) costs whilst overseas are also extremely high and should be avoided or kept to a minimum. It is recommended that staff with mobiles that automatically sync to an internet connection be turned off prior to their departure to minimise data usage costs.
