Data Plans for University Mobile Phones or Laptops

Data plans enable staff to access the internet from either a mobile phone or laptop (via USB modem) for a fixed monthly fee. Each plan specifies a certain amount of data usage (i.e. internet uploads, downloads and data transfer). There are a number of data plan options available with varying amounts of internet usage:

  • $10/ 150mb per month
  • $29/ 300mb per month
  • $39/ 1gb per month
  • $49/ 3gb per month
  • $79/ 6gb per month
Additional data charges will apply for exceeding a plans monthly limit:
  • For the $10/150mb plan: $1.00/mb excess usage charges (charged per kb).
  • For the $29/300mb and above plans: $0.50/mb excess usage charges (charged per kb).
  • Comparatively, staff that do not have a data plan activated can be charged up to $2.00/mb of data usage.

Internet access using your Mobile

Staff can set up a data plan if they would like to access the internet via their mobile phone. To establish data plan on a University-owned mobile, please complete this order form (xls file) and send it to the ITD Service Centre with the following information:

  1. Written approval from a supervisor and financial delegate.
  2. The data plan staff would like activated. Various data plan options and costs are outlined above.
  3. Confirm the mobile phone number to be connected to this data plan. This is for University mobiles that have already been purchased.
  4. Confirm the cost code for the ongoing monthly phone charges.
    Note: These data plans are not fixed to a specific mobile phone. As required, staff can contact the ITD Service Centre and request for the data plan to be modified.

Purchasing a USB modem for a Laptop

Staff that travel often may need to regularly access the internet from their laptop. This can be arranged by purchasing a USB modem. The USB modem is simply plugged into a laptop (using the USB port) and connects to the internet via the Telstra Next G network.

To purchase a USB modem and set up a data plan, staff will need to complete this order form (xls file) and send it to the ITD Service Centre with the following information:

  1. Written approval from a supervisor and financial delegate.
  2. A cost code for the purchase the USB modem.
  3. The data plan staff would like activated. Various data plan options are listed above.
  4. Confirm the cost code for the ongoing monthly USB modem charges.
