Citizenship / Residency Status Changes

It is important that your correct citizenship and residency status be recorded as this will affect

  • access and entitlement to Commonwealth support;
  • eligibility for HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, SA-HELP and OS-HELP assistance;
  • tuition fees calculated for your enrolment.

To check the status recorded for you, log on to CQUcentral, go to your Student Centre. In the Personal Information section, select the Personal Information link to view the recorded citizenship status.

If the recorded citizenship status is incorrect, you will need to provide proof of citizenship before any amendment can be made. Proof of citizenship includes certified true and correct copies of any of the following documents:

  • an Australian birth certificate
  • an Australian passport
  • a citizenship certificate
  • a Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status issued by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship or its predecessors (DIMA, DIMIA)
  • the title page and any Australian visa stamps from your passport

If your status is incorrect, you should send proof of your citizenship to:

How changing your citizenship or residency status can impact the fees charged for your enrolment?

Changing status from an international to a domestic full fee paying student

As an international student, your Tuition Fees were fixed at the rate applicable when you commenced study with CQUniversity as long as you were enrolled as an internal (not flex) student and continued in the same program at the same campus.

Tuition Fees are not fixed for domestic students. Fees are reviewed annually and can increase from year to year. You will be charged each term the rate applicable in that term. In some cases, you will pay more as a domestic student than the fixed fees you were paying as an international student.

Changing status from an international full fee paying to a domestic Commonwealth supported student

Some students who change status from international to domestic may be eligible for a Commonwealth supported rather than a full fee paying place. Once you have provided proof of the change to your status, the Student Business Centre will advise you of your options.

NOTE: Commonwealth supported places are not available at CQUniversity’s off-shore delivery sites.

Changing status from a permanent resident of Australia to a citizen

Students who have attended a citizenship ceremony and who are in possession of their Australian citizenship certificate may be eligible for FEE-HELP, Commonwealth support or HECS-HELP. Once you have provided proof of the change to your status, the Student Business Centre will advise you of your options.

NOTE: Commonwealth supported places are not available at CQUniversity’s off-shore delivery sites.
