You need to complete and submit all the documentation specified on the Central Queensland University Financial Aid Application Form. This allows your application to be assessed in accordance with the US Department of Education legislation and Central Queensland University policy in relation to the administration of the Stafford loan program.
All students who are borrowing a Federal Direct Stafford Loan for the first time from CQUniversity must complete an online Entrance Counselling Session before any Federal Direct Stafford Loan funds will be disbursed. Our office will receive notification three to five days after you complete the Entrance Counselling Session online.
The purpose of the Entrance Counselling session is to provide you (the borrower) with your rights and responsibilities before you borrow a Federal Direct Stafford Loan. It will cover the importance of repayment, the consequences of default, the use of the Master Promissory Note, and provide sample monthly repayment amounts. More information can be found on the Entrance Counselling Guide for Direct Loan Borrowers.
Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form should be filed after January 1st annually. Central Queensland University's Code for the FAFSA form is G30975.
You will be advised on the SAR print summary document that the Financial Aid Office receives this information in an electronic format. This is not the case for students attending foreign universities.
CLICK HERE to file your FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
You will need to obtain the necessary PIN to validate the signature before electronically sending the application to be processed. Parents (for dependant students) and students are required to have individual pin numbers.
PIN's can be obtained from going online with the US Department of Education - PIN Registration
Each student will be able to access their SAR with their PIN Number. Please fax or email this to our office (+617 4923 2474 or financialaid@cqu.edu.au ) along with the other documentation required in the Central Queensland University Financial Aid Application Form as it will enable the university to track and process your application more efficiently. The original application will need to be received at Central Queensland University prior to any certification.
To obtain a subsidized, unsubsidized Stafford Loan or PLUS loan, a student must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). A MPN must be signed online by the parent who applied for the PLUS loan. The MPN is a contract that you sign when you receive a loan. Signing this note indicates that you promise to repay your student loan. The note includes important information about your rights and responsibilities as a borrower. Electronically sign and complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) online.
The MPN you sign whilst valid for 10 years in the US will need to be completed annually with each new application for aid.
When you apply for Financial Aid, several factors are taken into consideration, such as total family income and earnings, assets, number in the household, and number attending college at once. The government then calculates an Expected Family Contribution, or EFC.
To determine your need, the Financial Aid staff subtracts the EFC from the Cost of Attendance. The Cost of Attendance includes tuition and estimated costs of room and board, travel, books, fees, and personal expenses.
You will be advised about your eligibility for need and non-need based aid. You will be required to confirm your intent to take this amount, or any other lesser amount on the award letter prior to certification taking place. This award letter can then be used in your visa application to prove that you have access to sufficient funds.
If you are a dependant student, the award letter will also stipulate how much money your parents can draw down for this award year as a PLUS Loan, if they wish to.
It is strongly recommended that you plan on having sufficient funds available for accommodation, books, supplies, and any other personal expenses during the first six to eight weeks of classes in the event that there is some delay in your financial aid arriving from the US. Whilst we will do everything in our power to ensure this does not happen, we want you to be covered for every eventuality.

Central Queensland University will deliver loan funds to existing students at the commencement of classes if your application is completed before this time. If you are a first time, first year undergraduate borrower, you will receive your funds 30 days after the commencement of term. Do not expect to receive funds prior to arriving in Australia.
Your Direct loan funds will be paid directly to CQUniversity. These funds will need to be converted from US funds into Australian dollars and you will be notified once this process has been completed by the university's bank. The funds will then be credited towards your tuition fee account and the remainder (if applicable) will be credited to your bank account (or in accordance with your disbursement options).
