Useful Links

When searching the web you will find that you can come across some absolute junk! At the same time however, there are also some valuable sites that do come up when you know where to look and how to search correctly. Below is a list of addresses for search engines that may be useful to you when searching for information on various topics. For further tips on how to evaluate websites (ie decide whether or not it is a useful and valid source of information) see our website evaluation checklist.

Quick Tips

  • Select only keywords to enter into your search engine (Not entire search)
  • Different search engines will provide different responses. If you cannot find what you are after, just choose another search engine and try again. Sometimes you may need to vary the keywords you enter.
  • Parallel search engines query other search engines and then report on the findings, so they are definitely worth checking.
  • Don't be afraid to use the 'Help' and 'Advanced Search' facilities on search tools, these can help to refine a general search so that you may get more directly relevant material.
  • Use Boolean operators (AND, NOT, OR) to narrow searches.
  • Australian search engines generally concentrate on Australian resources.
