Learning Skills Unit (LSU)

The Learning Skills Unit is a free and confidential service available to all students. It provides a relaxed and friendly environment where students can ask questions and seek support so that they can complete their assessment tasks.

Mission Statement - ‘To provide a supportive environment focused on enhancing student potential and lifelong learning'.

Our aim is to help with your transition to tertiary study in Australia and to support you academically throughout your course. We provide advice on the following:

  • Understanding university expectations in Australia
  • Developing effective study strategies
  • Improving grammar and written expression
  • Time management
  • Notetaking
  • Effective reading skills
  • Understanding the assignment question and course reading material;
  • Academic writing
  • Problem solving
  • Referencing & plagiarism
  • Preparing and giving a presentation
  • Exam preparation

You can book an individual appointment at any stage of your studies to see one of our trained tutors. For example, if you are having difficulty understanding an assessment task you can bring your course profile to the LSU to discuss how to best approach the topic. You can also bring in drafts of your written work at any time for feedback and comments.

In addition to individual appointments, the LSU also runs various group sessions and workshops on a weekly basis such as:

  • Generic workshops
(e.g. academic writing, referencing & plagiarism, research skills, living abroad, working with case studies and exam preparation)
  • Course specific work groups
(sessions which focus on specific courses and assignments)

The LSU also provides printed and online resources to further help students achieve their best academically.
