Frequently Asked Questions - General

Why have I been placed on a MAP stage?

Students will be placed on a MAP stage if they demonstrate unsatisfactory academic progress in their most recent term of enrolment.

How does the university define unsatisfactory academic progress?

CQUniversity defines unsatisfactory academic progress as a student failing more than 50% of their courses in a term, or failing the same course twice. This means that if you were only enrolled in one course and you do not pass this course, this is unsatisfactory academic progress. There are other factors that can place you on a MAP Stage, see the MAP policy and procedures.

Keep in mind also that if you withdraw from a course/s after CENSUS Date you will receive a Withdrawn Fail (WF) which appears as a Fail on your transcript and is a Fail for the purposes of MAP reporting.

If you are an international student, you are also putting your student visa at risk by not maintaining satisfactory academic progress.

What do I do if I believe I have been incorrectly identified at any stage in the MAP process?

If you believe this is the case, please let us know on (07) 4930 9456 or ssc-map@cqu.edu.au and we will be happy to look into this for you.

What if I had extenuating circumstances that prevented me from achieving satisfactory academic progress in my previous term?

In this instance, please visit www.cqu.edu.au then click on New/Current Students, Student Forms then Student Records (or click on http://www.cqu.edu.au/current-student/student-forms/domestic-students/student-records) to access the guidelines and application forms for withdrawal without academic penalty (an academic penalty is a fail grade).

If I change to another program (eg Bachelor of Information Technology to Bachelor of Arts) will I be removed from the MAP process?

No. Results from all undergraduate courses apply when a MAP Stage is calculated, regardless of program.

However, if at any stage you achieve two consecutive terms of satisfactory academic progress you will be removed from the MAP process.

Note that fails from enabling programs such as STEPS courses are not included in the calculation of the MAP stages.

Where can I go for more help?

The policies and procedures can be accessed at www.cqu.edu.au/map. The Student Support Centre can also help you. Ring (07) 4930 9456 or email ssc-map@cqu.edu.au.

If you need help preparing a Show Cause Student Response or an application appeal the Student Association is on hand to assist. They can be contacted on 1800 804 228 or (07) 4930 9656.

Note: If at any stage you demonstrate satisfactory academic progress for 2 consecutive terms, you will be removed from the MAP process.
