Engage Education Programs

Primary

Mobile Education Trailer (MET) – The MET is a travelling education vehicle that builds affiliation with university life through a virtual tour, and expands understanding of career opportunities through stories from high profile role models.  This program will be delivered to upper primary school students from the identified schools, their families and communities to raise awareness about the benefits of higher education and the multiple pathways to university.

The latest research suggests that targeting school grades 6 -10 will improve higher education outcomes for disadvantaged, particularly low SES students.  The report, Interventions early in school as a means to improve higher education outcomes for disadvantaged (particularly low SES) students, was commissioned by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and undertaken between August 2008 and September 2009.

Secondary

Most high school programs will involve students visiting the CQUniversity Rockhampton, Bundaberg or Mackay campuses to expand their understanding of university life and build an affiliation with tertiary education.

Each program is underpinned by a learner progression model and includes the articulation of key messages that have been constructed according to social, cognitive and psychological student stages of development.

The impact of programs is measured according to pre and post-evaluation instruments, the analysis of which is used to inform future program improvements.

Year 8 Film Making – students produce a film depicting how they will overcome challenges when transitioning to university, using the stages of the Hero’s Journey.

Year 9 Career Match – students complete an online career match survey and then acquire specific knowledge that will assist with attaining their chosen career path.

Year 10 Uni Skills – a structured program that guides students through career planning, academic writing, Moodle modules, and academic lectures/presentations about university and TAFE (partnership with Central Queensland and Wide Bay Institutes of TAFE).

Year 11 The Great Race – in teams, students will engage in a range of problem based learning activities designed to immerse them in experiences that will enhance their knowledge about university systems, processes and resources.

Year 12 Scholarships, Access & Support – students acquire specific information on the range of assistance and support available applicable to tertiary study.

Indigenous Specific

Badi Athu (Grow to Know) – an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander program providing culturally sound advice and guidance to assist students to prepare for learning and life beyond school drawing on experiences and knowledge from CQUniversity academics, Indigenous elders, students, graduates and staff.

Indigenous Youth Sports Program– a week-long program of sports and exercise clinics, academic workshops, cultural activities and discovering a university campus.
