Mr Gustavo Cereijo

Position: Visiting Latin Percussion Teacher

Gustavo arrived in Brisbane in the summer of 2005 from Sydney, where, for the past twenty five years, he has dedicated his life to pursuing and perfecting all genres of Latin music in particular Afro Cuban music, having traveled to the rhythmic & colourful Island of Cuba several times to advance his studies and passion. Touring and playing with international artists such as the Afro Cuban All Stars, Buena Vista Social Club, Jimmy Bosh, Gypsy Kings and one of Latin music's greatest voices; Oscar De Leon, enhanced and deepened Gustavo's knowledge and skills in directing and coordinating large musical ensembles. Working in Sydney, Gustavo became the Musical Director of three of the city's major Salsa bands, who have since performed at many memorable events including Sydney Bacardi Festival. For four years Gustavo toured intensively around Australia from 2001 - 2005 with Drum Beat, a show incorporating the art and origin of drumming and percussion (The Art of Hitting Things), sponsored by Billy Hydes and Latin Percussion. The purpose of this tour was not only to teach primary & secondary students how to drum, but to expose them to authentic World music and cultures. Gustavo has also performed on the TV Hit serious Australian Idol and MTV Music Awards 2006, now in Brisbane; he has formed Chukale, 11 piece Afro Cuban Salsa Ensemble, whose dynamic presence will ensure a world class standard to continue.
