Bachelor of Theatre - Musical Theatre Specialisation

Offered on Mackay Campus OnlymusicTheatre

General Musical Theatre Information

To gain entry into The Bachelor of Theatre requires that you make a separate application to both to the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) and to CQUniversity via our online application form. Acceptance into the program pathway of your choice is based solely upon a successful audition outcome.

Places within the musical theatre specialisation of the Bachelor of Theatre are strictly limited. Admission to the program is gained through an audition and interview process. Auditions are held annually in Mackay, Rockhampton, Brisbane, and other locations as required. Applicants who are unable, for whatever reason, to attend the audition dates for each respective city on the advertised dates, are permitted to audition by DVD.

As part of the audition consideration is given to:

  • The potential to develop all aspects of singing, acting and dancing
  • Estimation of physical ability and well-being to meet the demands of the program
  • Passion, commitment and overall suitability to a career in musical theatre
  • Potential to be a performer who displays overt traits of imagination and courage to take artistic risks

Specific Musical Theatre Audition requirements

Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled audition to ensure that you are adequately warmed-up.

There are three elements to the audition:

  • Singing
  • Acting
  • Dance

At the start of the audition, applicants should introduce themselves and tell the panel about how and why they wish to pursue a career in musical theatre. The panel may ask some follow-up questions based on the information you provide.

Applicants should then demonstrate:

Singing
Perform two contrasting songs from musicals.
You may use your own accompanist or use backing tracks if you have not had the opportunity to prepare your audition with an accompanist.

Acting
One contemporary monologue of no more than two minutes duration.

The monologue is to be performed from memory. You are free to choose which monologue you perform but we strongly suggest that you consider one that befits your age and gender.

Dance
Applicants should prepare a dance/movement routine in any style which must not exceed 3 minutes in length. Some impromptu direction-based activity may be required. Applicants must provide their own recorded accompaniment for the dance/movement routine.

What do you need to wear to the audition?

For the audition, you should wear comfor table casual clothes. You will need to bring appropriate dance clothing for the dance component of the audition. Jazz shoes may be worn, but are not required. The audition may be danced in bare feet.

When will you know the outcome of your audition and how do we correspond with you?

For applicants who apply and audition within the set audition period you will receive your audition results via the post in late November or early December. Late applicants will receive results 1 to 2 weeks after their audition or submission of DVD/Tape.

Further Information for applicants auditioning by DVD

Whereas CQU prefers to audition applicants in person, where this is neither practicable nor possible, an audition by DVD is permitted. The following requirements must be followed in respect to DVD auditions:

  1. Please ensure that you are fully visible in the camera frame.
  2. The DVD should begin with the applicant giving their name, age and stating why you particularly wish to study musical theatre at CQUniversity (Australia);
  3. The audition material must conform to the same requirements as for in-person auditions.
