Bachelor of Theatre - Drama Specialisation

Offered on Mackay Campus Only

General Drama Information

To gain entry into The Bachelor of Theatre requires that you make a separate application to both to the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) and to CQUniversity via our online application form. Acceptance into the program pathway of your choice is based solely upon a successful audition outcome.

Places within the Drama specialisation of the Bachelor of Theatre are strictly limited. Admission to the program is gained through an audition and interview process. Auditions are held annually in Mackay, Rockhampton, Brisbane and other areas as required. Applicants who are unable, for whatever reason, to attend the audition dates for each respective city on the advertised dates, are permitted to audition by DVD. Please see further information below.

As part of the audition consideration is given to:

  • Estimation of a commitment to becoming a professional actor
  • Determining the extent to which training will reveal the full potential of the actor within
  • Potential to be a performer who displays overt traits of imagination and courage to take artistic risks

Specific Drama Audition requirements

Applicants should wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing too much make-up. Do not dress to interpret the role. The use of a prop should only be used where elementary to the performance requirement of the monologue.

At the start of the audition, applicants should introduce themselves and tell the panel about how and why drama is important in their lives. The panel may ask some follow-up questions based on the information you provide.

The audition will then proceed with the following set requirements:

  1. Two classical monologues of no more than two minutes duration (only one will be asked for initially but both must be prepared if the panel wishes to hear the second selection)

One of the classical monologues must be from a play by Shakespeare. The other selection must similarly be in blank verse or verse - not prose. A vast selection of classical monologues can be found in monologue books and on the Internet. Applicants are advised to choose monologues carefully (preferably in discussion with a teacher). Some suitable monologues are by authors including Greek plays (in verse translation), Marlowe, Sheridan, Kyd etc.

  2. One contemporary monologue of no more than two minutes duration.

All monologue are to be performed from memory.  The choice of monologue(s) for audition purposes should be considered carefully in tandem with the musical material to be presented.

When will I know the outcome of my audition and how will you contact me?

For applicants who apply and audition within the set audition period you will receive your audition results via the post in late November or early December. Late applicants will receive results 1 to 2 weeks after their audition or submission of DVD/Tape.
