In 1989 the Queensland Conservatorium of Music established a regional campus in Mackay. Located in a leased school facility in Shakespeare Street, it was originally intended to deliver preparatory courses in music. The growing strength and recognition of the institution and its incorporation into CQUniversity in 1996 confirmed the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) as an entity in its own right.

In 2000, CQCM moved to its new, purpose built facility at CQUniversity Mackay. This further cemented its place as a quality, music-training centre that was committed to long-term viability and a sustainable contribution to the arts in Central Queensland. A number of important strategic decisions including, the establishment of industry partnerships with Hamilton Island Enterprises, touring projects, links with overseas institutions and international staff, and the growing recognition of the CQCM brand, all contributed to its current national and international status.

CQUniversity now offers music and theatre undergraduate programs in Rockhampton, Mackay with some programs available by distance education. Through the various specialisations, students are encouraged to take their music and theatre skills to the highest levels possible through a wide range of performance opportunities that include a variety of different music ensembles and stage productions. CQUniversity is renowned for its commitment to excellence, and as a student you will be inspired and motivated to achieve your very best by the staff and industry professionals who teach in each of the programs.
