Creative Writing

The Master of Letters consists of 50 per cent coursework (24 units of credit at 6 units of credit per course) and 50 per cent dissertation (24 units of credit). Coursework normally consists of 4 courses or equivalent, based on assessment for each of not fewer than 5000 words or equivalent, in reading courses relevant to the discipline area. The word length of the dissertation will be no fewer than 15 000 words, and no more than 20 000 words.

Elements of Writing 1

Credit: 6 Units of credit (12.5%)

Description: This course introduces students to the basic elements of writing creatively, providing them with both theory and practical exercises in the techniques explored. The course will cover point of View, characterization, writing dialogue, working with setting and plot/suspense/pace. Students will create pieces embodying all of these techniques.

Elements of Writing 2

Credit: 6 Units of credit (12.5%)

Term: Terms 1 & 2

Description: This course continues the explorations of basic writing skills begun in Elements of Writing 1. In this course students will engage with and produce pieces of writing, working with image/symbol/rhythm realism/impressionism/expressionism/stream of consciousness/multiple narrative viewpoint/anti-realism/humour/pathos.

Writing Short Fiction

Credit: 6 Units of credit (12.5%)

Description: This course will explore a range of creative and technical issues involved in the writing of short stories/short novels. Students will produce either a portfolio of short stories or a short novel.

Writing Poetry and Short Dramatic Pieces

Credit: 6 Units of credit (12.5%)

Description: This course will study a range of creative and technical issues involved in the writing of shorter forms of poetry and one act plays. Students will produce either a portfolio of shorter poems of varying forms or a one act play.

Dissertation A and B

Credit: 24 Units of credit (50%)

Description:
The dissertation for this stream will involve writing a substantial creative piece (Fiction, Poetry, Drama or Other Approved Mix) accompanied by a theoretically informed self-critique.
