2010 - North Keppel Island

For the first time, two workshops were held in 2010; our annual writers' workshop and a professional development workshop for teachers of writing.

1. Memorys and Memoir: Writing Your Life.

CQUniversity's literary magazine Idiom 23 hosted the Memory and Memoir writers' workshops at the North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre, located off the Capricorn Coast, from 7th to 9th May, 2010. With first class tutors and some exciting exploration of the island, writers attending the workshops were provided with plenty of inspiration.

The Writer in Residence was Janene Carey, a journalist and specialist in memoir writing.

Janene is completing a creative writing PhD at CQUniversity on home-based palliative care and ethical life writing. She is a part-time journalist with The Armidale Express and her work has also been published in The Sydney Morning Herald, TEXT, Idiom 23 and Re-Placement, the 2008 AAWP national anthology of creative writing from universities across Australia. She was shortlisted for the 2010 Calibre Prize, a major Australian non-fiction writing award, and her essay will be published by Australian Book Review later this year. Her blog, In Medias Res, can be found at http://janenecarey.blogspot.com

Workshops were also conducted by Dr Lynda Hawryluk and singer-songwriter Nicole Francis. Dr Lynda Hawryluk was the workshop co-ordinator.

2. Getting them writing, keeping them writing: Professional Development for Teachers of Creative Writing.

Presented by Idiom 23 magazine and CQUniversity, this unique workshop was held from July 30th - August 1st 2010.

Our Writer in Residence Michael Hyde put a small but dedicated group of teachers, writers and education students through their creative paces.

Michael is a highly regarded author and experienced writing teacher, having worked with many high school and tertiary students in Victoria and interstate for over 30 years. His novels MAX, Tyger Tyger, Hey Joe and Surfing Goliath are critically acclaimed and regularly feature on school reading lists.

The Workshop Coordinator for this year was Dr Lynda Hawryluk, who brought her own experience as a qualified high school English teacher to several in-depth workshops on creativity and writing.
