2008 - North Keppel Island
CQUniversity's Idiom 23 Literary Magazine sponsored a highly successful creative writing workshop on North Keppel Island recently. Thirty eight participants, including writing coordinator Dr Lynda Hawryluk , tutors Kristin Hannaford, Louise Waller and songwriter Steve Butler were the guests of NKI Environmental Education Centre, travelling across to the island on Gundoo Spirit, on September 12.
Writers came from South Australia, Brisbane, Capalaba, Clermont, Mackay, Rockhampton and Yeppoon.
An intertidal walk conducted by NKIEEC staff, and early morning trek ‘walking through time' to Considine Beach preceded thought provoking sessions on the ecology of the island, playing with text, studying ‘poems the size of photographs ‘ as students explored the possibilities of generating new writing using images as starting point.
Steve Butler's tutorial on lyric writing -‘ the song as a journey through sound' was followed with a popular evening of songs developed from students' themes. Dr Hawryluk conducted a final session on reflection and consultation - an overview of the weekend, and an opportunity to reflect on the writing journey taken by everyone.
"Idiom 23 Literary Magazine and CQU have been sponsoring these workshops on Pumpkin Island, North Keppel Island and at Byfield National Park for many years and hope to continue to do so in the future," Idiom 23 Editor and workshop coordinator Dr Liz Huf said yesterday.
"It wouldn't be possible without the assistance of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) and Arts Queensland - and certainly not possible without the expertise of our writing coordinator, lecturer Dr Hawryluk, and talented tutors," she said.
