  PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
GRAPHICS / 2D CAD COURSE OVERVIEW

 Rationale:
A need for a professional development program which gives relevant practical advice and help in the teaching of Graphics has been expressed by current vocational education students in the CQU's Faculty of Education and Creative Arts.

It is recognised that whilst you have knowledge and skills in your particular field of experience and qualification and are competent to teach to Senior level in the particular Subject Area Specification (SAS) in which you have these skills, you may not have the same confidence in teaching Junior courses. Even those of you who have been involved with some aspects of drafting may find that the suggested techniques and practical skills involved when teaching children may vary from your own.

In an effort to update your content knowledge within a practical teaching/learning context, the Faculty has been in discussion with personnel from The Rockhampton Grammar School and it is proposed to offer a 40 hour intensive course in Graphics as well as many other important aspects of life in a Manual Arts (or Industrial Design and Technology) Department.

Details of Course:
Monday 1st July to Friday 5th July 2013 - 8am to 5pm
at
The Rockhampton Grammar School
Archer Street,
Rockhampton, Qld 4700.

Course Facilitator:
- Gary Paxton - experienced teacher having 20 years teaching experience in a variety of schools in Queensland.
- Metal Tradesman (Sheetmetal Worker) in the Rockhampton Railway Workshops.

Course Overview
The course will cover a typical Queensland school's Junior Graphics course progressing from Year 8 through to Year 10. Whilst it is appreciated that all schools are different and courses may vary considerably between them, there is a considerable degree of commonality existing between Industrial Design and Technology Departments and the particular intention of the proposed course is to focus on this.

The course will cover:
The completion of practical work covered in Years 8 - 10 Graphics courses. Both in manually drawn and cad settings. The course facilitator will give detailed explanations of processes used together with demonstrations ofappropriate teaching techniques.

  • All work completed will be assessed and a possible method of profiling results discussed in conjunction with assessment techniques.
  • Practical classroom management advice ie how to overcome potential student problems
  • Planning and development of courses.
  • Facility maintenance and model resource development
  • Workplace Health and Safety requirements
  • Budgeting ie where does the money come from (and go), and why can't we get more?
  • Question and answer sessions.

You will be provided with a Resource Booklet which contains questions of proposed drawings together with related exams and contextual units.

Assessment
Will consist of:

  • Practical course work
  • Practical Test

Refer to your Course Profile for more details.

Outcomes
This course will give you information and skills to help you tackle the majority of Junior Graphics courses being taught in Queensland schools with confidence. The course is based around manual drafting and 2D Cad techniques and some concept sketching will be undertaken to compliment the course.

  • You will receive important teaching, classroom management and administration tips from practicing teachers.
  • You will receive a copy of some useable resources. Completion of the course will help you to receive credit towards your degree program.
