Conduct Disorder Behavioural Intervention Program

Treatment for children and youth at risk for long-term antisocial outcomes in hard to reach families.

A conduct disorder behavioural intervention program is currently being conducted by a team led by Professor Kevin Ronan at CQUniversity, Rockhampton. The purpose of this study is to find out whether an intervention program helps young people who are having difficulty managing their behaviour. This program is focused on helping the family and the young person better manage his or her behaviour. This project is in partnership with the local Youth Justice Services. This project is currently funded for a 12 month period, with the hope of securing additional funding to extend into a four year project.

This project has been operational for seven months and receiving referrals (n = 30) for five months. Initial results for the 15 families that have been accepted for treatment, including the 12 families currently receiving treatment (three are awaiting treatment) are quite promising with all families showing significant growth with regard to their goals, based on ongoing collection of data during the treatment delivery. Additionally, ongoing monitoring of family levels of satisfaction with services reveals very high levels of satisfaction with regard to how the program is being conducted and that it is meeting the needs and expectations of families. These initial findings lay the groundwork for further research into outcomes of the program and larger-scale dissemination of the program into usual service settings.
