Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education

Based on a distillation of 50 years of research on good teaching practice, Chickering and Gamson (1987) identified seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education. These Seven Principles underpin the scholarship of Learning and Teaching at CQUniversity.

Benefits of utilising the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education (Chickering
& Gamson 1987) may include:

  • Engagement with students by creating an environment of co-operation and collaboration, thereby enhancing the learning relationship
  • Focuses all stakeholders on the learning journey and puts the student at the centre
  • Illustrates respect for differences and ensures the student is informed about their progress
  • If utilised correctly, maximises the value of the learning experience, subsequently becoming a showcase of best practice in learning and teaching, as it is used as an authentic and holistic approach to learning and teaching.
