Resources for Curriculum Development and Learning Design

A distinction is made between Curriculum Development which refers to the development of the curriculum at program level whilst Learning Design refers to the development of the curriculum at course level.

There are different conceptions and views of ‘curriculum’ each with different aims, goals and outcomes. The curriculum is both the planned process, the actual implementation of teaching and the students’ experiences of the learning process. It incorporates the philosophical outlook of the teacher and who the learners are, assessment tasks, learning and teaching activities, subject content and the development of skills and values.

The development of curriculum (program level) and learning design (course level) should take into account national education policies (AQF and TEQSA) and the CQUniversity context. Curricula also needs to be sensitive to a range of learner needs and backgrounds. Contemporary approaches to designing curriculum should equip learners with the skills to access and manage information and prepare graduates for the environment within which they will work.

The CQU process for curriculum development and learning design emphasises:

  • Stakeholder consultation that enhances community engagement
  • Planning that aligns with strategic and contextual imperatives
  • Learning design that engages students
  • Technologies that support learning and teaching outcomes
