The Education Revolution

It is expected that the Higher Education sector in Australia will be undergoing some fundamental changes over the next few years. The Australian government has commissioned, and now responded to a Review of the Australian Higher Education Sector (the Bradley Review of Higher Education). This review is informing the governments "Education Revolution". Key initiatives announced by the Federal Education Minister include:

  • Forty per cent of 25 to 34 year olds to have a bachelor degree by 2020 - an extra 300,000 students.
  • Universities to decide how many students they admit to each course, with funding following the student. The Government will give extra loading to certain courses and universities based on national priorities.
  • A new body, the Australian Qualifications Framework Council, to build links between universities and vocational training sectors.
  • Students to be allowed to move seamlessly between universities and vocational trainers.
  • Twenty per cent of higher education enrolments at undergraduate level to be from low socioeconomic background by 2020 - an extra 55,000 students.
  • A $2 million study to explore how Charles Sturt University and Southern Cross University might amalgamate to form a national university for regional, rural and remote area students.
  • A national regulator to register, accredit and monitor tertiary courses and providers.
