CQUniversity New Staff Orientation Checklist (to be completed by ALL Supervisors)

Overview

The CQUniversity Induction and Orientation program is designed to ensure new staff have both the information and the support they need to become a valued and contributing member of the University. The Induction and Orientation program consists of essentially three parts. The first part is the online CQUniversity Induction Program which is accessed through the Professional Development Website. The online induction includes compulsory Health & Safety inductions, compulsory Equal Opportunity inductions, as well as general information about the University.

The second part of the Induction and Orientation program is the orientation or introduction you as the supervisor provide to the team, work unit and faculty/ directorate; and includes campus specific information. This checklist has been developed to provide some assistance in this area.

The third part of the Induction and Orientation program are the inductions provided for Academic staff by the Office of Learning and Teaching, and the Office of Research.

Why is Induction and Orientation important?

To ensure all staff members have the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the needs of their role and the expectations of the University, they need to have Clarity around their role within the University; and understand the Culture of their local team as well as the University; in order that they may display the Capabilities necessary to support the University in its operational and strategic direction. The Induction and Orientation program is designed to provide the necessary underlying information to support this process.

The specific outcomes of the Induction and Orientation program should:

  • Confirm for the employee that CQUniversity is a Great Place to Work;
  • Clarify expectations to enable the employee to quickly become an effective contributor to the University;
  • Improve the likelihood that the staff member will behave according to the expectations of the University (including the Code of Conduct);
  • Enable the individual to integrate into the team and University culture;
  • Enhance the employees opportunities for ongoing professional development through the introduction of resources and networks, and familiarisation with the development opportunities for career long learning;
  • Ensure that the employee is familiar with their rights and obligations.

In addition to the formal elements of this program, the Orientation into the local workplace is an opportunity to discuss how you as the supervisor and the employee can support each other, in working together in line with the strategic direction.
