Safe Working From Home

Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 the University has a duty to ensure the health and safety of staff whilst at work that could include conducting work activities from your home. To assist you in providing a work area in your home that is safe and free from potential hazards, please read through the following information.

If you have any questions regarding your working from home please contact the Safety and Environment Unit via safety@cqu.edu.au.

Workstation Design

Your computer based workstation should be set up following ergonomic design principles. Poorly designed workstations can lead to headaches, neck pain, shoulder or wrist pain and sore eyes. Ensure you have adequate breaks away from your computer to rest your eyes and reduce fatigue.

Please refer to the Safety - Workstation Setup webpage for guidance on how to set up your workstation correctly.

Floor Area

Slips, Trips and Falls are a very common hazard when working from home. Items such as cables and rugs, children’s toys or pets can present a hazard. When working from home, ensure the area around your workstation is clear from hazards. Floor surfaces such as wooden floors, stairs and gloss tiles may also present a slipping hazard. Ensure you have a clear path of exit in case of a fire or other emergency at home.

Electrical Safety

Electricity is a potential risk that can cause electrocution, electric shock and can be a source of fire in the home. Check that electrical equipment is in good condition, look for frayed leads and cracked plugs. Double adaptors can overheat, melt and cause a fire. They should not be used within a work environment. To ensure your workstation is safe from electrical risks, ensure your home has a RCD fitted to your Switch board or use a portable safety switch.

Environment

Other environmental hazards to be aware of include, temperature regulation (hot and cold), noise, ventilation and sufficient lighting for the task. These items not only make your workstation more comfortable but also reduce the risk of injuries and illness.
