Major Risk - Use of Contractors

CQUniversity is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, students, members of the public and contractors. It is our policy that all activities on University grounds are carried out safety and in full compliance with relevant legislation.

Unsafe work practices can result in serious injury and damage to property. They can also result in criminal charges and large financial penalties for employers and contractors alike. It is a condition of entry to all campuses that contractors understand and acknowledge the CQUniversity Health, Safety and Environmental Contractor Induction Handbook.

The Facilities Management Directorate must be informed of and provide approval for use of contractors or sub-contractors for activities before, during or after events.

Registration of Contractors

All contractors must be registered as an Approved Contractor before they can proceed with any work within the University and must have completed:

  • General Construction Industry Health and Safety Induction Course (blue card) and
  • CQUniversity designed Health, Safety and Environmental Contractors Induction session either face-to-face or online.

Site Access, Authorisation and Signing-in

When a Contractor arrives on University grounds they are to report to the respective designated area at each campus and complete the sign-in register.

Contractors will be issued with a CQUniversity identification badge which must be worn while working on-site and returned to the designated area on completion of the work. Contractors must notify the CQUniversity Project Officer of their presence on the site.

Signing in areas are:

  • Rockhampton: Facilities Assistance Centre, Building 37 (further sign-in registers are located for the Capricorn College and Information Technology Directorate, Building 19)
  • Mackay:  Administration Building
  • Bundaberg:  Facilities Management Office or Main Administration Building
  • Gladstone:  Facilities Management Office

Induction

All contractors must undergo the CQUniversity online Contractor Induction.

On completed contractors are required to download and complete the CQUniversity Contractors Information Sheet, record their blue card number on the sheet and have their supervisor sign to confirm their participation in the online induction. The completed information sheet can then be faxed to People and Culture on fax 07 4930 9022.

Risk Assessments & Work Method Statements

Contractors are required to provide risk assessments and where necessary Work Method Statements for high risk contraction activities to event organisers prior to those activities being undertaken.

Work permits are required for the following activities:

  • Confined Space Entry
  • Hot Works
  • Working with Asbestos Containing Materials
  • Trenching and Excavation
