Swimming pools present a number of hazards that can contribute to the risk of drowning. CQUniversity references the Royal Life Saving Society - Australia (RLSSA) Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations to determine suitable controls for the use of pools including but not limited to adequate supervision, the use of lifeguards, adequate pool safety devices, and emergency procedures.
Event organisers must ensure that a Risk Assessment is conducted to identify and pool or water related activities, and appropriate controls as required under legislation and RLSSA Guidelines, are in place prior to the event.
The CQUniversity Sports Centre management can provide further information on pool safety for events, and must be involved in planning for the use of the pool during events held at the Rockhampton campus.
A Risk Assessment must be completed for all Pool and Water Related Activities at events. Suitable controls must be implemented to either eliminate risks, or to reduce those risks as far as is reasonable practicable.
The Safety and Environment Unit must be involved in planning for any events involving pools or water-related activities.
